Accoyo Stud Males

Accoyo is the name of the most famous alpaca farm in Peru. Founded by Don Julio Barreda in the 1940's, the name Accoyo is synonymous with excellence and a lifetime devoted to the improvement in alpaca breeding. Working from a small farm set high above Macusani on the Peruvian altiplano, Barreda's alpacas have earned him a reputation as the foremost alpaca breeder in the world. Despite the political turbulence of the past 25years which has afflicted his country he has managed to maintain sole ownership of the Accoyo herd, providing a continuous line of alpaca improvement for almost sixty years. The Accoyo bloodlines have laid the foundations for many of the prize winning herds on three continents outside Peru. Accoyo animals typically produce strong boned, excellently conformed alpacas exhibiting bright fleeces with uniform fineness, great character, exceptionally high density and consistency of colour. Barreda's focus has been to breed pure white Huacayas and Suris that consistently produce high cutting weights of quality fine fibre. He was the first to acknowledge that the Suri and Huacaya were in fact very different alpaca genotypes.

Through the introduction of fencing, detailed record keeping, a ruthless culling program and highly selective breeding he spent the first ten years separating out the Suri and Huacaya to breed true to type. Don Julio then devoted his next thirty years to breeding for consistency in fleece density, fineness and high cutting weight. His dedication to the alpaca has been exceptional and testimony to his achievement is the creation of the unique Accoyo herd. Somerset Accoyo Sappa Inca Sappa Inca is jointly owned by Naturally Alpacas and New Zealand Alpacas. Imported from Don Julio Barreda's elite Peruvian herd in 2002 to Australia we purchased Sappa Inca earlier this year having seen his outstanding offspring. Kaihere Accoyo Spartacus The third of our outstanding white huacaya males, Spartacus is a product of Don Julio Barreda's "Fine" line of elite males.  Imported from Peru in 2002, Spartacus is jointly owned by Silverstream, Glenloch, Ridgedale and New Zealand Alpacas. Spartacus has a lighter and slightly smaller frame than "Gauciman" and "Sappa Inca". At time of selection in Peru, Spartacus was the finest animal (15.2 micron) in the entire shipment of over 250 elite animals. Surilana Parsifal The first of our elite accoyo white suri males, Parsifal has already made his mark in New Zealand by producing some truely remarkable off-spring.  Parsifal is a stong boned compact male with excellent conformation. Surilana Massay-Mo Massay-mo the second of our Accoyo white suris is a larger framed animal. Like all our Accoyo suri males, Massey-mo was selected by Jill Short (Surilana Alpacas) at Don Julio's Accoyo estancia in the rarified atmosphere of the Peruvian altiplano. Massay-mo is one of a long line of prue-bred suris and although yet to be proved, it is highly likely that like all our Accoyo suri's that he is homozygous. Surilana Rufino Rufino is a similar male to Parsifal, he is solid boned and carries a fine fleece on a compact, well conformed frame. Once again Accoyo born and bred, Rufino brings with him all the attributes associated with Don Juilo's bloodlines. Yet another truely superior male. Kaihere Accoyo Brilliante Imported into New Zealand in 2002 from Peru via Australia, Brilliante is a proven homozygous white suri male. Has has the added advantage of throwing colour when used over coloured dams, making him an ideal candidate for huacaya breeders wishing to move into the rapidly developing suri market.
